Implementing the business strategy step by step at an international audit and consultancy organisation (Big Four)

Problem statement

Support the twelve partner teams in translating the overall business strategy into strategic and tactical objectives for each team. Also help us determine what these objectives will require in terms of leadership in the coming years.

Approach

A preparatory team was formed from each partner team. Together, we explored what the committee needed to translate the overarching business strategy into a strategy for the relevant team. Based on the needs of the twelve teams, we developed a number of standard building blocks that could be used flexibly. In workshops, the teams worked on topics including:

  • team development;
  • developing, implementing and delivering the strategy step by step;
  • storytelling;
  • performance management;
  • personal leadership.

Throughout all the sessions, we continuously examined what the decisions made would mean for clients, the organisation’s own professionals and the way people worked together. We also gathered the key elements for the desired leadership profile. This profile was agreed upon during a one-day conference involving all partners. Each team then translated the profile into individual and collective leadership development priorities. Together, the interventions developed to address these priorities formed the leadership programme.

Impact

Thanks to the differentiated approach, each team followed a programme tailored to its specific needs. The overall business strategy was translated into SMART objectives for each team. A roadmap was also developed for each team, including the resources required to achieve these objectives. The sense of shared responsibility for achieving the agreed objectives was strengthened. Finally, concrete agreements were made at both team and individual level to strengthen the leadership needed to implement the strategy successfully.
