Aligning the organisation with strategic ambitions
Challenge
The consultancy organisation had experienced significant growth in a short period and operates in a market that has undergone major changes due to legislation and regulations. The number of municipalities it serves has increased considerably, as has the complexity of the issues it addresses. The combination of growing pains and an ambitious set of strategic objectives prompted the organisation to engage Bright & Company. Together with the management team, we worked towards creating an organisation fit for the future.
Approach
Over the course of several working sessions with the management team, we defined a manageable set of organisational design principles. These principles were derived from the internal and external challenges the consultancy needed to address. We then developed several scenarios for the future organisational structure and assessed them against the design principles. This resulted in a preferred scenario, which we developed further, including the allocation of tasks and responsibilities, job profiles, reporting lines and a new meeting structure.
Throughout this process, we worked closely with the works council. Before submitting the formal request for advice to the works council, we invited a number of employees to critically review the proposed structure. Once the works council had approved the proposal, employees were informed.
One of the subsequent challenges was recruiting two managers. Bright & Company was asked to work alongside colleagues from de Galan Groep’s Executive Search team to oversee their recruitment and placement.
Six months after the new structure was introduced, we conducted an evaluation. Based on the findings, several adjustments were made.
Impact
The revised organisational structure has led to greater attention being paid to clients, employees and the quality of services. The management team now has greater capacity to focus on achieving the organisation’s internal and external strategic objectives. The organisation offers employees more opportunities for career progression and can scale its operations up or down relatively easily.
