Structure follows strategy! From strategy to an appropriate organisational setup and management system

The assignment involved an international contracting company that installs subsea cables for wind farms. Increasing competition has put considerable pressure on project margins. This calls for a streamlined organisation that combines high-quality services for clients with cost-conscious working practices.

Bright & Company was asked to advise on the organisational structure and governance needed to support the medium-term business strategy.

Together with the management team, we translated the medium-term business strategy into clear design principles. The central question was which strategic objectives the future organisational structure needed to support.

We then evaluated the existing structure through group interviews. Based on the findings, we developed several scenarios for the future organisational structure. Each scenario was assessed against the previously agreed design principles.

After selecting the most suitable scenario, we worked out the organisational design in greater detail. To support this process, we brought together a group of key people from different parts of the organisation to challenge and contribute to our thinking. They reviewed the proposals and enriched them with their knowledge and experience.

The approach consisted of two phases. The first involved defining the new organisational structure and governance arrangements. The second focused on implementation, from assessments of managers to introducing the new meeting structure.

As a result, the organisation adopted a modern way of working that closely aligns with its chosen business strategy. Managers and employees understand the decisions made and are equipped to work in line with them.

This has laid a strong foundation for achieving the organisation’s strategic ambitions.
